First Bunch of Leafs

July 4th, 2011

Nissan’s new electric plug in electric vehicle has been available for pre-order since October last year; deliveries will be starting this week. The zero-emission car is currently built in Japan, but will be manufactured in Sunderland from 2013, following the start of production of lithium-ion batteries for such cars at the plant in 2012. The first load of the Nissan Leaf arrived in the North of East of England onboard the “City of St. Petersburg” which is Nissan’s own energy saving car carrier. It is quite fitting that the deliveries of the new Nissan Leaf – an environmentally friendly car is the energy saving vessels maiden voyage.

Simon Thomas, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Nissan International SA said, “The arrival of the Nissan LEAF, the world’s first affordable, all-electric car, in Europe is a landmark day for Nissan and European transport. The Nissan LEAF is a genuine alternative to petrol and diesel cars in terms of style, features, safety, performance and handling.” The City of St. Petersburg vessel has a sleek and semi-spherical bow which according to Nissan and its designers reduces wind resistance by up to 50%, resulting in fuel reductions of up to 800 tonnes annually, equivalent to about 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The carrier will join the fleet of ships which also export hundreds of thousands of vehicles from Nissan’s Sunderland Plant each year. “It is fitting that this first shipment of Nissan LEAFs is arriving on our new energy-saving car carrier, the City of St. Petersburg.

We look forward to delivering these cars to the very first Nissan LEAF customers, who share our vision for an environmentally sustainable future for road transport” said Simon Thomas. Before the Leaf could be shipped over to the UK and sold an EV charging network infrastructure had to be installed across the UK. North East England alone will have 1,300 charge points by 2013, including quick chargers capable of refuelling a Nissan LEAF from when the empty warning light switches onto an 80% charge in just under 30 minutes. Nissan’s network of EV dealers – currently 25 sites across the UK including Nissan Ireland – will all be equipped with a quick charger.

How To Pass Your Driving Test First Time

July 4th, 2011

When you learn to drive it really is one of the most exciting things you will ever do. However it is also one of the most daunting when you have learned all there is to learn and you need to pass your driving test.

Every countries driving test is different, so the specifics of what will be involved in your specific test cannot be covered in this article, however what we talk about here is relevant to taking your driving test no matter where you are in the world.

The first and most important thing you must be before your test is prepared, if you have not had enough driving lessons, or enough experience behind the wheel in a whole range of different situations, then there is a good chance that you will fail to pass your test simply because a situation arises in the test for which you are not prepared.

If you feel like you are weak in certain areas then it is essential that you delay taking your test and undergo further training to strengthen these weak points, you may well be able to take your test and get lucky and pass it even with weak skills, but you will be a poor driver for the rest of your driving life, you will frustrate other road users and quite possibly will be a danger on the road, both to yourself and others.

With enough training in place, and with you feeling confident you have enough experience to cope with any situation that may occur on the road, it is time to get ready for the test itself.

Preparing for your driving test is much like preparing for any other exam or test, the key is in knowing everything you possibly can about what it is you are being tested on, in this case driving. Mental preparation is also important, we all know how easy it is to go blank on a question in an important exam, the stress and the tense build up to the event causes us to panic on the day and our minds can simply fail to remember even the most basic of answers.

You must ensure you are relaxed when your driving test day arrives, it is natural to be a little anxious but you must do what you can to be as relaxed as possible in the days building up to your test day, and on the day itself. Try to go out with friends the night before, or watch a whole season of your favorite television program, this way your mind wont be on the exam and you will wake up on your test day much more relaxed.

During the test it is essential you exude confidence, do not be cocky with the examiner, but do be confident in your driving style, hesitancy and uncertainty are major factors in failing the driving test, so think like you have been driving for years, and drive like it to.

To summarize, the key point is practice, if you have enough practice driving in lots of situations then you will be relaxed in the exam, and drive with confidence, and when you approach your exam in this manner you are maximizing your chances of passing, getting your driving license, and setting yourself on the road to freedom, or if not the road to freedom, at least the road to the local shop when you need milk.

Audis First Skis

July 4th, 2011

Audi have invested in two skis rather than four wheels for the first time after decades of Audi expertise developing quattro models that resolutely hold the road even on snow and ice. The new Audi Carbon Skis is made from the brand’s very latest lightweight construction know-how and its famous design and development process which ensures it brings time-honoured Vorsprung durch Technik innovation to the black run. The new high-tech skies are being developed for ‘series production’ and will hopefully be available as early as this coming winter 2011/2012. The experts from Ipswich Audi Concept Design have kept the structure of the skis simple. The outer shell of high-strength carbon fibre encloses layers of aluminium and titanium, and a wood core; each ski will be around 200g lighter than comparable models.

The lightweight carbon fibre has its advantages as it gives outstanding strength, good damping properties and stiffness and at the same time minimising torsion and revolutionising the handling properties of the ski. Last month during the most famous downhill race in the world, the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbuhel, the first prototypes of the Audi Carbon Ski were tested on the slopes and now are being tested at the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Wolfgang Egger, Head of Design for the Audi Group said: “Carbon and aluminium are central elements in Audi design – these exclusive materials underscore the outstanding quality of our cars, the design of the ski also intentionally dispenses with unnecessary lines and concentrates fully on the material.”

First Batch of Leafs Hit The Streets

July 4th, 2011

Delivery of the first batch of 100 Nissan Leafs began this week. The fully electric family car has been available to order since September last year. At a Nissan dealership in Waltham Abbey Smooth Radio DJ Mark Goodier and electronics engineer Richard Todd took delivery of their Nissan LEAFs today. This groundbreaking moment represents the start of Nissan’s vision of bringing sustainable mobility to the mass market in the UK. The Smooth Radio DJ has been driving electric and hybrid cars for the past 10 years, on picking up his new fully electric Nissan he said, “The great thing about electric cars is that the fuel distribution is already in place.

We all have mains electricity at home. We have it at work and councils are already working on how to install thousands of charging points at the roadside. You can see why EVs make such sense, particularly in towns and cities. The LEAF is a proper full size family car with a 100 mile range – way more than most drivers do in a day. It’s everything that people like me who have been driving electric vehicles for a long time have been waiting for. It’s going to change our lives for the better.” Richard Todd from St Albans, Hertfordshire is a Silicon chip designer, he was the first customer in the UK to place his order for a Nissan LEAF when the order books opened September 2010. He and his wife Jane took delivery of a black Nissan LEAF with the optional solar panel.

Todd arrived to pick up his Nissan LEAF in a Toyota Prius. Todd said, “The Nissan LEAF is ideal for us as a family with the range and size being more than adequate for most of our driving needs. At evenings and weekends, we’ll be using the Nissan LEAF mainly for local trips and transporting our two children between their many activities.” The Leaf is not yet available at Nissan cars Guildford but no doubt, if the fully electric vehicle is successful then it will be available via all Nissan outlets.

The Worlds First Extendedrange Electric Vehicle

July 4th, 2011

Chevrolet, relatively unknown in the UK so far is the first manufacturer to produce an extended-range electric vehicle. The Chevrolet Volt cleverly combines pure electric propulsion with an on-board range-extending generator in its innovative ‘Voltec’ drive train.

Chevrolet is now proud to announce that the Volt will be eligible for the UK Government’s Plug In Grant, Chevrolet may just be about to get very popular in the UK! Chevrolet UK’s MD, Mark Terry was very pleased to find out about the grant eligibility and said, “we are extremely pleased that the Government has accepted the Volt within its grant programme – as the first car in the world of its type, it means we can really hit the ground running when it arrives in the UK. Volt is an incredible car that has already changed the game in its home market – with its innovative range-extender motor, it’s the first no-compromise electric car that completely alleviates the range anxiety felt by users of pure electric vehicles, yet has the capacity to operate at all times with zero tailpipe emissions”. Until the Volt, plug in electric cars had a limited mileage range of about 50-60 miles; the Volt can do 300 miles with 50 of those being entirely on electric power.

The way the battery and petrol engines combine is fundamentally what makes the Volt different from other plug in hybrids. In the Volt, once the battery reaches a limited state of discharge, a petrol-powered generator kicks in to sustain battery charge until the car can be plugged in and recharged. Even with the motor running, the electric motor continues to drive the wheels, making it significantly different to hybrid electric vehicles. Customer perception will change when the Volt goes on sale in 2012; it is not like your typical used Chevrolet in Llangefni. The Volt will showcase the amount of research and testing carried out by Chevrolet and GM to make the Volt different and much more practical.

Car Keys: First Hennessey Venom delivered

July 4th, 2011

In latest car news, the Veyron beating Hennessey Venom is en route to its new owner, after being produced at the company’s Silverstone plant.

Currently being transported to its lucky new owner in the Middle East, Venom chassis number one is the highest spec model, achieving an astonishing 1,200 bhp from a twin turbo 6.2 litre engine that can reach speeds of over 260 mph. Using the Lotus Elise as a base, the Venom has revamped the original Elise body, turning it into a carbon fibre, full bodied, muscular car – complete with a fully adjustable spoiler. It’s certainly faster than the Lotus, weighing just 1,220kg and propelling itself from 0-62 mph in less than 3 seconds.

As well as the super-super car version, the Venom is to be made in an entry level format, boasting a smaller but perfectly manageable 725 bhp – perfect for those who can’t quite stand the hair-raising attributes of the full-bodied version. Whichever Venom one chooses, you can be assured that passers-by will stand gobsmacked at the sheer power of the Venom that surely blows the Bugatti Veyron off the racetrack.

With prices of the 1,200 bhp version standing at £680,00 the car certainly isn’t cheap – but with power like that, no-one will be able to catch up with you to tell you otherwise. Whilst the first incarnation of the Venom is being delivered to the UAE, fear not, other Venom’s are in production and with a little luck, being bought by UK car enthusiasts so that we can see this supercar in the flesh, and quiver.
